Six domains. One anatomy.
A Working Definition
Capability is not a mood, an aesthetic, or a slogan. It is a composite state of the human being — what a person can, in fact, do, in the world, under pressure, over time.
Anabasis recognizes six domains that together constitute the working anatomy of a capable individual. They are not independent industries. They are the parts of a single structure, each reinforcing the others, each degraded when any of them is neglected.
What follows is the glossary of that structure.
Health
The substrate.
The physical and metabolic state that determines whether all other capabilities can be exercised at all.
Sleep, movement, nutrition, and the disciplined avoidance of decay. Health is measured over decades, not weeks.
A tired mind cannot study.
A depleted body cannot bear responsibility.
Discipline of the body precedes discipline of the will.
Character
The private root.
The disposition of the self when no one is watching. The determining factor in the sign — positive or negative — of every other capability.
Keeping small promises, refusing small lies, and cultivating the habits that survive the collapse of external structure.
Only character can bear authority.
Character governs whether capital corrupts.
The instrument obeys the intent behind the hand.
Knowledge
The inheritance.
The stored record of what human beings have understood. Received in books, verified in practice, extended by inquiry.
Reading with attention, writing with care, teaching without pretense, and the daily habit of correction.
Knowledge that makes nothing is ornamental.
Knowledge sets the terms on which capital is deployed.
One cannot lead what one does not understand.
Leadership
The accountable whole.
The practiced willingness to be responsible for outcomes one did not personally cause. Not charisma. A working habit.
Naming what is true, taking the last decision, protecting the people below you, and outliving your tenure in the results.
Capital
The stored effort.
The compounded record of prior labor, made available to future ambition. Not wealth for its own sake — resource for institution-building.
Patient allocation, honest accounting, restraint in consumption, and a horizon measured in decades.
Capital funds what has not been built yet.
Capital enables the quiet research others cannot fund.
Stewardship of capital is a civic act.
Creation
The made thing.
The capacity to bring into existence what did not exist before — an enterprise, an invention, a building, a proof, a body of work, an institution. Technology is one of its instruments, not the capability itself.
Beginning before the conditions are ideal, finishing what was begun, submitting the work to judgement, and maintaining what one has built.
How the Six Interlock
No capability stands alone. Read across a row to see where a domain depends; read down a column to see where it is depended upon. A gap in any cell is a gap in the whole.
